History of Morgan Mill School
The history of the first Morgan Mill School begins on March 21, 1879 when two acres of land was deeded to the
community for school purposes.
In 1906 a new two story school house was constructed on what is
now the present site of the Morgan Mill School land. In 1918 the school was destroyed by
fire. A four room, limestone rock school building was then built on the same
site. The school children attended classes in the churches while the school
house was being built.
In 1939 the WPA started construction
on the new school. The first classes were held in the new building in
September, 1940 as some of the classrooms had been completed by that time. The
gymnasium, the rock wall and other structures were completed in 1941.
The Morgan Mill School is one of the few remaining WPA school
buildings still in use in Erath County. It has been the hub of many community
activities for five decades and it is hoped that the building will serve a
vital role in the community in the decades ahead.
A special thanks
to Gene L. Williams for the history of the Morgan Mill School.
